Does alcohol make you fat?
A concise answer to a short question: Yes, it most certainly does! Alcohol helps you gain weight faster than any other food or drink. There are several reasons for this: First, the chemical composition of alcohol is similar to that of sugar – and sugar is, next to fat, the food richest in calories. Second, the body perceives alcohol as a poison which it wants to rid itself of as fast as possible. Therefore alcohol is digested before anything else. The result is plain to see!
Alas, the calories stemming from the digestion of alcohol frequently meet a large part of the daily energy intake required by the body. The remainder is not burned but is deposited in the “savings box” for lean times – as body fat. What’s more, a trucker only needs half of the calories compared to a bricklayer or tiler. Every beer therefore counts double. But as long as it’s only one during the evening it’s ok: beer in moderation has been proven to be beneficial to health.
