This is the police: Correct behaviour during police checks
Police checks are stressful situations – for all concerned. The driver automatically asks himself, “have I done something wrong?” The police officer has no idea with whom he is dealing. He must be prepared in case a potentially violent situation arises. These different standpoints can quickly create a tense atmosphere.
As a driver, you can help avoid misunderstandings during such a check. You will not only underline your own safety but, with the correct behaviour, you can also relieve any tension that may arise. The police check will be shorter and you will be able to continue with your journey sooner. There are no hard and fast rules here. You should however, always avoid situations that could be misunderstood by the police officer carrying out the check.

These simple rules will help during police checks:
  • Stop smoothly. Avoid abrupt braking
  • Put your hands on the steering wheel after stopping your vehicle
  • Follow the instructions of the police officer exactly
  • Avoid fast or hectic movements. The police officer carrying out the check does not know what your intentions are
  • Do not take any objects in your hand that could be considered “dangerous”
  • Avoid any kind of concealed movement. Always announce your intentions before acting (e.g. when reaching for the registration documents etc.)
  • Should you be carrying weapons or other dangerous items make this clear to the officer
  • During the hours of darkness switch the interior lights of your vehicle on
Through your behaviour and by adopting a professional and polite manner you will greatly contribute to creating a more pleasant experience for both sides during the police check and ensure that it will be completed faster.
Have a good trip!

Self-protection during police checks
The fact that police officers place a hand on their weapon during checks should neither unsettle nor intimidate you. This behaviour is simply a part of police training and serves to protect the officers. During searches of vehicles and persons police officers will actually draw their service weapon in order that they can react quickly in an emergency. This is purely a precautionary measure and is no reason for you to be alarmed.
