New drivers’ hours rules
Currently applicable drivers’ hours at a glance
Since September 2006, drivers’ hours for professional truck drivers have been standardised across Europe. In April of this year, there have been further minor modifications to some of the rules. For you to be able to keep track of the applicable rules please find below an overview of current drivers’ hours – as a reminder on the road.

Break down into 2 phases permitted: one 15 minute break followed by a break of 30 minutes

Daily rest periods
| 11 hours minimum
Reduction to 9 hrs permitted (three times in-between 2 weekly rest periods). Compensation no longer prescribed.
Breaking down into 2 phases permitted, then 12 hours rest minimum. First, 3 hours are to be taken, followed by 9 hours.

Weekly rest periods
| Minimum 45 hrs inc. one daily rest period
Reduction to 24 hrs permitted, but then the following applies for the following two week period: - Two rest periods of 45 hrs. or - One rest period of 45 hrs plus one rest period of 2 hrs. max (must be compensated for within 3 weeks)
Weekly rest period to be taken after six 24 hrs periods (no exception)

Even with two drivers present, rest times must not be spent in a moving vehicle. Both drivers must take their rest time simultaneously. According to the rules, a rest period may only be spent with the vehicle stationary.
