High visibility jacket now also compulsory in Belgium

Safety vests
Belgium is the ninth country in Europe to introduce compulsory high visibility vests. From 1st February 2007, all motor vehicle drivers will be obliged to wear a high visibility vest as soon as they leave their vehicle on motorways or highways.
The high visibility vests, which must carry the current EN 471 EU label, are available in red, orange and yellow. They may be purchased in motor vehicle accessory stores for between 5 and 15 euros. It is recommended that the jacket be readily available in the cab and that it be donned before leaving the cab should an emergency situation arise.
High visibility vest compulsory in Europe
To-date these are compulsory in the following countries:
- Finland
- Italy
- Croatia
- Austria
- Portugal
- Spain
- Czech Republic
- Germany
In some countries carrying high visibility vests in the truck is a statutory requirement. Not being able to produce such a vest during traffic checks may result in a fine.
